COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18 Ohio State women’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 B1G) kicked off the spring season with a pair of wins vs. Bowling Green and Xavier in its home-opening doubleheader Saturday at the Varsity Tennis Center.

“It was a really good way for us to start out our season,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “We’re going into a really tough stretch and starting off 2-0 is a positive. For one of the first times in a while we have a veteran team, but Bowling Green was good and Xavier is going to be tough this year. As far as setting us up, I think this was a really good day for us.”

In the first match of the doubleheader vs. Bowling Green, Ohio State captured wins on all three doubles courts. Freshman Andrea Ballinger and redshirt senior Nicole Flower defeated Leeah Floyd and Antonina Farrar at No. 3, 6-1, while sophomore Anna Sanford and junior Miho Kowase won 6-0 on court one vs. Emily Witt and Polina Radeva. Junior Ferny Angeles Paz claimed a 6-2, 6-0 victory on court three shortly afterwards. Sophomore Olivia Sneed fell behind early on in the first set but battled back to top Drew Fillis 7-5, 6-0. After losing the first set, junior Gabriella De Santis took the second to force a match tiebreaker vs. Radeva on court one. De Santis triumphed, 10-8, in the tiebreaker to shutout the Falcons.

After a short intermission, the Buckeyes were back in action vs. Xavier. In doubles, the Buckeyes downed the Musketeers in all three matches to gain a 1-0 advantage. Di Lorenzo and Sneed teamed up to notch the first doubles win, 6-0, vs. Xavier’s Lauren Ghidotti and Sophia Abelson on court three. The duo of De Santis and Paz quickly followed with a 6-2 victory vs. Cristina Di Lorenzo and Alex Brinker. On court one, the No. 6 ranked pair of Sanford and Kowase claimed a 6-4 victory vs. Sydney Liggins and Amina Ismail to claim the Buckeyes’ second doubles sweep of the day.
