Opponent familiarity will be scarce for the Buckeyes this weekend with the most recent meeting against any of the foes coming in a 1994 sweep of Butler. Ohio State has taken each of six sets played in a pair of matches vs. the Bulldogs all-time while dropping the lone match-up with Wyoming back in 1982. South Dakota and OSU will square off for the first time.
A QUICK GLIMPSE ACROSS THE NET
The weekend opposition combined for 62 wins in 2014, paced by Wyoming’s 23-8 mark. The Cowgirls return six starters and were picked to finished fourth in the Mountain West preseason poll, including a first place vote. Butler came in at fifth place in the BIG EAST preseason poll following its 20-10 campaign a year ago. The Coyotes of South Dakota enter 2015 coming off back-to-back 19-win seasons.
CAREER RECORD BOOK WATCH
Despite only two years in the program, a pair of juniors in Valeria León and Taylor Sandbothe have already made their mark in the Ohio State all-time record book. León’s 2.82 digs per set entering 2015 are slotted 11th in school history. Sandbothe, meanwhile, has assaulted the record book to the tune of four top-20 rankings thus far. Her 1.09 blocks/set clip is the third highest; accompanied by 55 solo blocks (tied for 13th), 260 total blocks (19th) and .262 attacking percentage (19th).
• The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) has tabbed Ohio State as the 14th-ranked team in its 2015 Preseason Coaches Poll. Six Big Ten schools are included in the top-25 and an additional three are receiving votes. The Buckeyes finished last season slotted 13th nationally by the AVCA.
• Taylor Sandbothe has earned the admiration of Big Ten head coaches, voted as a member of the Preseason All-B1G Team.
