COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (0-0 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team opens the 2009 season in Williamsburg, Va. at the Tribe Invitational on the campus of William & Mary. The Buckeyes open the invitational at 10 a.m. Friday against Rider and face North Carolina A&T at 5 p.m. OSU completes play Saturday with matches against Maryland Eastern Shore at Noon and play host William & Mary at 7 p.m.

A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
Head coach Geoff Carlston is in his second season with the Buckeyes. Ohio State was 12-20 overall last season and finished 10th in the Big Ten Conference with a 3-17 mark.

A LOOK AT RIDER
Emily Ahlquist is the head coach for the Broncos. Rider was 9-19 overall last season and finished 10th in the MAAC with a 2-16 record.

A LOOK AT NORTH CAROLINA A&T
Toni Conway is the head coach for the Aggies. North Carolina A&T was 7-22 overall last season and finished fifth in the MEAC-South with a 2-6 record.

A LOOK AT MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE
Don Metil is the head coach for the Lady Hawks. Maryland Eastern Shore was 25-9 overall last season and finished first in the MEAC-North with a 10-0 record.

A LOOK AT WILLIAM & MARY
Melissa Aldrich Shelton is the head coach for the Tribe. William & Mary was 19-9 overall last season and finished third in the Colonial Athletic Conference with a 9-5 record.

SZERSZEN RETURNS TO ACTION
After missing the final 23 matches of the 2008 season, Anna Szerszen returns to action this season. She returned to Europe this past Summer to play for the French National Team. Szerszen averaged 3.52 kills and 1.52 digs per set last season.

DULL EARNED HONORABLE MENTION ALL-BIG TEN HONORS LAST SEASON
Katie Dull, a junior outside hitter, earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors last season. She started 18 conference matches last season averaging 4.51 points per set.

OHIO STATE HAS THREE MATCHES ON THE BIG TEN NETWORK
Ohio State will have three Big Ten matches telecast live on the Big Ten Network this season. Both Penn State matches and OSU’s home match with Illinois will be broadcast. The Buckeyes host Penn State at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 7 and return the trip to Penn State at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28. The Buckeyes will host Illinois at 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14 in St. John Arena in a match that will be broadcast at 8 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 15.

HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON
Geoff Carlston is in his second season at Ohio State. He came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach of Ohio University where he built an outstanding program. His squads played in five NCAA tournaments, reaching regional play in 2005. At Ohio, Carlston guided the Bobcats to five-consecutive Mid American Conference championships with an overall record of 144-22. He had a MAC conference record of 78-2 and was 14-1 in the conference tournament, winning four of five. 

Carlston was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year.

He began collegiate coaching with three years at Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) where he posted a 49-42 record. His career record is 205-84.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
OSU continues on the road when it travels to Ft. Collins, Colo. to play in the Colorado State Hilton Classic. The Buckeyes face host Colorado State at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. The Buckeyes face Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. and Texas Arlington at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5
