Buckeyes Notch 5-2 Win at Purdue

Share

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team posted a 5-2 victory at Purdue Sunday in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes picked up the doubles point and then notched four singles wins, including three in three sets, for the Big Ten victory. No. 35 Ohio State is now 12-6 on the year and 6-3 in Big Ten play. Olivia Sneed, Danielle Wolf and Mary Beth Hurley all won in singles and doubles for the Buckeyes.

"Quoting Coach Schaub: That was a really gritty performance today. We have had some tough 4-3 matches this year that didn’t go our way. Today we fought hard and for Olivia and Shiori to win basically simultaneously at the end was really good to see. Shiori was match points down and Olivia fought back after losing the first set. There were a few different momentum swings during the match from both teams. Purdue is a good team and they played well. We are happy with this one."

In Doubles
The Buckeyes won the doubles point for the 15th time this season to take a 1-0 lead over the Boilermakers.

The Buckeye duo of freshman Maria Tyrina and sophomore Danielle Wolf did not drop a game on court three, defeating Alex Sabe and Seira Shimizu, 6-0. The Buckeyes’ No. 30-ranked team of Shiori Fukuda and Anna Sanford then fell to Silvia Ambrosio and Caitlin Calkins, 6-2. It was just the second loss for the Ohio State duo this spring (12-2).

The doubles point came down to court two. Buckeye senior Olivia Sneed and freshman Mary Beth Hurley secured the team point with a 6-4 win over Ena Babic and Zala Dovnik, with the Ohio State tandem breaking for the victory.

In Singles
Purdue’s Seira Shimizu tied the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Maria Tyrina on court four.

Ohio State won the next two matches for a 3-1 lead. Mary Beth Hurley dropped just three games on court six vs. Zala Dovnik (6-2, 6-1). On court five, Danielle Wolf rallied from a set down against Caitlin Calkins. After losing the first set 6-3, Wolf won 6-1 in the second to force a third set. She shut out the Boilermaker in the third for the match.

Silvia Ambrosio drew Purdue within one (3-2) as she topped No. 54-ranked Anna Sanford in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, on court one.

The Buckeyes prevailed in three sets in the last two matches on court for the 5-2 team win. On court two, No. 105-ranked Shiori Fukuda won the first set 6-3 before Ena Babic claimed the second by the same score for a deciding set. The Buckeye won in a tiebreaker to secure Ohio State’s team victory.

While Fukuda’s match was wrapping up, Olivia Sneed rallied for a three-set win of her own against Alex Sabe on court three. Sneed dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker before winning the second, 6-2. In the third, Sneed prevailed 6-3 for the 5-2 team final.
