COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a day in which high winds ushered in higher scores in West Lafayette, Ind., the Ohio State men’s golf team moved up the leaderboard into fifth place at the 2011 Big Ten Championships. The Buckeyes’ third round score of 302 (+14) on the par 72, 7,465-yard Kampen Course was tied for the second lowest on the day and brings their three-round total to 902. The Scarlet and Gray will head into the final round four strokes back of Indiana and Northwestern in a third-place tie.

The Ohio State charge was headed by Brad Smith, who will go into the final round in a tie for sixth place.  The senior fought off the swirling gales to tally several birdies and fire a 5-over 77, bringing his three-round score to 222.

Just behind Smith was fellow senior Michael Cress in 25th place. Cress’s team-low round of 2-over 74 was highlighted by a pair of birdies on the front nine to bring his total score to 226. Closely following Cress was junior Alex Redfield in a tie for 28th-place. Redfield’s 4-over 76 performance helped bring his two-day total to 228.

Also competing for Ohio State was senior Bo Hoag with a 6-over 78. Hoag’s 231 will send him into the final day of play in a tie for 32nd place. Rounding out the lineup for the Scarlet and Gray was junior Dan Charen in a 42nd place after a round of 5-over 77. He will start the final round with a total score of 235.
