Tulsa, Okla. — Tuesday at the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships saw continued success for multiple Buckeyes. Chris Diaz picked up right where he left off on Monday, taking down the tournament’s number seven seed Jakob Sude of Oklahoma State in straight sets. Diaz will take the court again on Wednesday to face AJ Catanzariti, a qualifier from Texas A&M, in the third round.
Ralf Steinbach also picked up the victory against Dennis Mkrtchian of UCLA in a three set thriller. Steinbach roared back after dropping the first set, winning the second in a twenty-point tiebreaker before winning the third set 6-4. Steinbach advances to play another qualifier, Aleks Vukic of Big Ten rival Illinois, on Wednesday. Times for both matches have not yet been announced.
Two teams of Buckeyes also began action in qualifying doubles, both moving on to the second round. Herkko Pollanen and Mikael Torpegaard took down the team of Bradley and Goldberg from North Florida in straight sets. Diaz also teamed up with Hunter Callahan to take down the second seed in the tournament, Adams and Vinsant, from Texas A&M in straight sets.
On Tuesday night, Pollanen and Torpegaard dropped the first set to third-seeded Alejandro Augusto and Hunter Harrington of Clemson only to battle back and win the second set in a tie-break. That set up a super tie-breaker to decide the match which the Buckeye duo dropped 10-3. Diaz and Callahan’s match against the duo of Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa of San Francisco started Tuesday night and will be completed Wednesday morning.
Riley Reist, Pollanen, and Kevin Metka were all victorious in their singles consolation matches, with Reist winning in straight sets in the pre-qualifying consolation and Pollanen and Metka both pulling out three set victories in the qualifying consolation. Callahan dropped both sets in his consolation match to Beck Pennington of Kentucky.
