COLUMBUS, Ohio – After the first day of men’s competition at the NCAA Fencing Championships, the Buckeyes are in third place with 122 total victories. With two rounds of round-robin fencing left in the championships, the Buckeyes are 18 points behind second place Columbia and 35 points behind leader, and reigning national champion, Notre Dame.
Seniors Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger, Maximilien Chastanet, Stas Sudilovsky, and Lewis Weiss are all fencing in the championships for the fourth time in their careers.
The epee unit contributed 18 points to the teams total in the first three rounds of competition. Both Weiss and Blais Belanger finished the day with nine victories each. Weiss will enter the second day of competition in 8th place with a +11 indicator while Blais Belanger is in 9th with a +9 indicator.
Domenik Koch finished in the highest position for the men’s squad after one day of fencing. His fifth place finish comes after earning 10 victories and a +27 indicator. Frederik Koch ended the day in 16th with six victories and a -18 indicator. The sabre unit added 16 points to the team’s total.
After three rounds of fencing, the foil unit earned 12 points. Chastanet won seven bouts to finish 12th with a +2 indicator. Sudilovsky goes into the final two rounds in 19th place with a -16 indicator.
The men will fence two rounds on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. followed by semi-final and final bouts beginning at 1 p.m. They will be aired on ESPN3 or can be streamed in the WatchESPN App.
