Ohio State led by stellar opening round of 68 from junior Brad Smith
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team finished the first round of action at the Boilermaker Invitational Saturday before heavy rain postponed the second round of play in West Lafayette, Ind. The Buckeyes fired a team score of 288 in the first round on the par 72, 7,465-yard Kampen Course and head into the final day of play in second out of the 12-team field.
Many players completed portions of their second rounds before severe weather forced tournament officials to halt play for the day. The tournament will resume Sunday as teams complete the remainder of round two at 8:45 a.m., followed immediately by round three which will begin with scheduled tee times.
Junior Brad Smith led the charge for Ohio State during the opening round, firing a 4-under 68 to tie for first. It was the third sub-70 round this season for the Peru, Ind., native and the seventh overall for the Buckeyes.
Also in the top 10 with Smith was freshman Matt Turner at 1-under 71. The Dubai native will head into the final day of play in a tie for seventh place.
Fellow freshman Zack Sobel also posted a solid performance for Ohio State, notching a 74 to head into the weather delay in a tie for 29th place.
Senior Brad Wright tallied a 75 in the first round, putting the Cambridge, Ohio, native in a tie for 38th place while junior Bo Hoag carded a 77 to round out the Buckeye lineup in a tie for 49th.
