COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of wins over in-state foes Cleveland State and Denison at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Friday evening. The Buckeyes defeated the Vikings, 178-113, and the Big Red, 167-124, handing both programs its first loss of the season.
Coaching against his alma mater Cleveland State, the victory had special significance for third-year head coach Bill Dorenkott.
“It’s a thrill to coach against my former coach Wally Morton,” Dorenkott said. “I have great respect for him as a coach and a person. We talk on the phone at least once or twice a week.”
The team of Kelsey Moran, Catherine Eitel, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay (1:44.93). Senior captain Samantha Cheverton continued the winning trend with a first-place finish in the 1000 freestyle, with fellow Buckeye Natalie Nichols and Beth Defauw finishing in second and third, respectively.
“We’re progressing really well with our pace, as well as technically,” Dorenkott said. “For some kids, learning to have patience is the key, but I feel pretty good with our progress at this point.”
Detro followed with her first individual victory of the evening, in the 200 freestyle in 1:50.60 (Anita Beck was second). She would later add a win in the 100 freestyle in 50.62 with freshman Phoebe Cater second.
Alex Norris recorded a win in the 200 butterfly in 2:04.94 (Angela Severn was second). Cheverton then tallied another victory in the 200 backstroke inching out freshman Libby Hunsche for the win in 2:02.95.
Also recording individual victories for the Buckeyes were Eitel in the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.53 (Severn was second), Lisa Narum in the 500 freestyle in 5:04.75, Michelle Williams in the 100 butterfly in 56.18 and Norris recorded her second victory in the 200 IM in 2:06.81 (Emily Creran was second).
Ohio State closed the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle relay with the team of Detro, Williams, Cater and Narum in 1:35.90.
