OSU/BALL STATE SERIES HISTORY
Ohio State and Ball State have met 16 times since 1964 with Ohio State leading the series, 11-5.
BALL STATE WINS, 20-8
A hot and hard-hitting Ball State team came back from a five-run deficit to record a 20-8 win over No. 23 Ohio State last year at Bill Davis Stadium. The Cardinals scored their 20 runs off 16 hits with 12 of them extra base hits. They scored five in the seventh, four in the eighth and seven in the ninth inning.
Ohio State countered with 15 hits and three home runs – by Michael Stephens, Ryan Dew and Michael Arp – but four errors and 18 relief corps runs ultimately did in the Buckeyes.
BUCKEYE STAFFORD IS A CARDINAL
Former Buckeye Michael Stafford is an assistant coach for Ball State. Stafford, a relief pitcher for the Buckeyes who lettered in 1997-98, is in his seventh year as pitching coach on the Ball State staff and his fifth year as coach Greg Beals’ top assistant. Stafford’s staff was No. 1 in the MAC last year in overall and league games earned run average.
Stafford, all-Big Ten in 1998, graduated from Ohio State in 1998 and spent four seasons in minor league baseball before embarking on his coaching career.
WIMMERS POY QUARTERFINALIST
Alex Wimmers has been named by the College Baseball Foundation one of 25 quarterfinalists for the 2010 Pitcher of the Year Award. Wimmers, fifth at Ohio State alltime with 265 career strikeouts, is 9-0 this season with a 1.61 earned run average. He has 78 strikeouts and has allowed just 20 walks and 53 hits in 67.0 innings pitched. He also has two complete games.
STEVE ARLIN NAMED TO CWS LEGENDS TEAM
Steve Arlin, the great Ohio State pitcher of the 1960s who led the Buckeyes to two College World Series and to the 1966 CWS championship, has been named to the College World Series Legends Team as part of the commemoration of the final Series in Omaha’s Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium.
