Columbus, Ohio – The 11th-ranked Ohio State (20-7 overall, 11-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball squad came away Saturday with the outright regular season MIVA championship after 13th-ranked Loyola-Chicago (18-5, 10-2) was defeated at 15th-ranked Ball State (18-10, 7-5). The Cardinal victory gives Ohio State a fourth consecutive regular season championship. The Buckeye run is the second longest in the conference after Ball State’s five-year run from 1964 to 1968. Ohio State previously had won three consecutive titles from 1981 to 1983.
The Buckeyes have the No. 1 seed in the MIVA Tournament and received a quarter final bye. Quarterfinal matches will be played Saturday, April 24 with the No. 7 seed Grand Canyon (14-25, 1-11) at No. 2 seed Loyola-Chicago (18-5, 10-2), No. 6 seed Quincy (15-17, 2-10) at No. 3 seed Lewis (18-9, 7-5) and No. 5 seed IPFW (12-16, 4-8) at No. 4 seed Ball State (18-10, 7-5). Ohio State begins play in the semifinals April 28 when they host the winner of IPFW and Ball State. Quarterfinal winners between Grand Canyon and Loyola-Chicago and Quincy and Lewis will play at the highest remaining seed. Semifinals winners will advance to the MIVA Tournament Championship match, May 1, at the highest remaining seed.
