COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite jumping out to an early 6-0 lead, the Ohio State wrestling team dropped a 27-9 decision to No. 13 Michigan Friday night in St. John Arena. A trio of Buckeyes in Nick Heflin (174), C.J. Magrum (184) and Colt Sponseller (165) secured wins for the Scarlet and Gray.
Ohio State (2-7; 1-3 Big Ten) will return to action Feb. 4 and 5 when it first travels to Champaign to wrestle No. 14 Illinois at 8 p.m. ET. The following day, the Buckeyes will return to St. John Arena where they will host No. 4 Minnesota at 7 p.m. The match at Illinois will air live on BigTenNetwork.com, while the matchup vs. the Gophers will air live on the Big Ten Network.
Heflin, a redshirt-freshman from Massillon, Ohio, gave the Scarlet and Gray a 3-0 advantage after he downed Justin Zeerip, 2-1, at 174 pounds. Following a scoreless first period, Zeerip’s escape in the second proved to be not enough as Heflin answered with a reversal at the 1:02 mark in the third.
A 4-1 decision over Hunter Collins by Magrum at 184 pounds seemingly gave the Buckeyes the fast start and momentum they needed in front of a crowd of 2,765. Forty-seven seconds into the match, the Buckeye captain from Oak Harbor, Ohio, scored a takedown and after choosing bottom in the second period, escaped Collins for a 3-0 lead. Collins cut Magrum’s lead to two (3-1) when he recorded an escape in the third, but Magrum, a redshirt-sophomore, continued to accrue riding time and eventually compiled 2:39 to secure the win.
Sponseller concluded the evening with a 5-1 victory vs. Aaron Hynes at 165 pounds. A pair of takedowns in the first period helped Sponseller, a senior captain from Glenmont, Ohio, take a 4-1 lead. After a scoreless second and third period, a riding time of 1:14 gave him the bonus point and his fourth consecutive win.
Down 5-0 in the second period, redshirt-junior Bo Touris rallied to tie the score, 6-6, in the third, but 2:09 of riding time by Michigan’s Sean Boyle was the difference maker as Touris lost 7-6.
Jared Kusar, who received the starting nod for the first time since Dec. 19 at Penn State, also dropped a close match at 157 pounds, losing to Brandon Zeerip, 10-6. With the scored tied at 5-all, Kusar chose bottom to start the third period. Escaping within 12 seconds, Kusar took a 6-5 lead, but with 24 seconds left, Zeerip scored a takedown, followed by a 3-point nearfall 15 seconds later.
