COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team battled top-ranked Oklahoma State in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship Friday, falling 3-1-1 to the Cowboys. The loss eliminates the Scarlet and Gray from competition on the par 72, 7,407-yard Karsten Creek golf course in Stillwater, Okla.
The Buckeyes reached match play following a sixth-place finish after three rounds of stroke play. The finish secured a top eight spot for the Scarlet and Gray, marking the team’s best finish since 1998.
In other quarterfinal action, Duke upset the top-remaining seed UCLA, 3-1-1, while Georgia also took down Illinois by a final count of 3-1-1. In the other match of the day, August State defeated Georgia Tech by a score of 3-2.
Ohio State was led by Dan Charen, who defeated Morgan Hoffman 1 Up. The junior was down through much of the front nine, but battled back to take the win. Bo Hoag faced the No. 2-ranked player in the country in Peter Uihlein and the pair finished their match all square after 17 holes. The final hole was not played because Oklahoma State had already won the pairing.
Brad Smith hung with Kevin Tway through 17 holes, but eventually fell 2&1. Michael Cress was back-and-forth with Sean Einhaus the entire day before Einhaus overtook the Dublin, Ohio, product. Cress made a late comeback, but was taken down 3&2. Junior Alex Redfield also competed for the Buckeyes, but fell 4&2 to Talor Gooch.
Capping stellar careers is the senior trio of Hoag, Smith and Cress. The three have led the team athletically this season with the three best stroke averages on the squad, while also leading academically. Hoag finishes his Ohio State career as a two-time First Team All-Big Ten honoree and a 2009 All-America honorable mention. Smith also earned conference honors this season, being named Second Team All-Big Ten. All three are four-time Ohio State Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-Big Ten selections.
