COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team dropped an 11-4 contest against UNCG Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 15-24 overall, while the Spartans improve to 24-14 in 2017.
MISCUES HELP SPARTANS TO EARLY LEAD
The Spartans took advantage of three OSU errors to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. The first two runners reached safely after a lead-off walk and dropped ball at first base on a sacrifice bunt. A single and two-base error in center field allowed the first two runs to score. The lead grew to three runs when a ground ball to second base pushed home a run.
POHL DRIVES IN A RUN
Freshman infielder Conner Pohl drove in the first run in the bottom of the second with his second double of the season to the gap in left center. Sophomore catcher Jacob Barnwell was hit by a pitch and scored on the play. Sophomore designated hitter Andrew Fishel singled and fifth-year senior Shea Murray walked, but the bases were left loaded when UNCG right-handed starting pitcher Matt Frisbee struck out a batter and got a pop-up to get out of the jam. Frisbee improved to 6-2 on the year, working 8.1 innings to lead his team to the road series win. He limited the OSU bats to four runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.
UNCG ADDS TO LEAD
The Blue and Gold chalked a run in the third and two in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. Austin Embler drove in a run on a single to left center in the third. In the fourth, a RBI ground out by Caleb Webster and RBI single by Michael Gross made it a five-run advantage. A two-run double in the top of the fifth made it 8-1. The Spartans scored three more times in the sixth.
BUCKEYE LATE RUNS
Junior outfielder Tre’ Gantt scored the second OSU run on a RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Washington drove in a run on a RBI double in the bottom of the ninth. Gantt had a sac fly for the final run.
ON THE MOUND
Left-handed starter Connor Curlis gave up six runs, four earned on 11 hits with four strikeouts and one walk to drop to 2-2 in 2017. He was relieved by right-handed reliever Curtiss Irving with one down in the bottom of the fifth. Irving tossed one inning and gave up three runs on three hits with one walk. Left-handed reliever Joe Stoll threw 1.2 scoreless innings with a walk and strikeout. Right-handed reliever Kyle Michalik threw the final two innings allowing two hits with three strikeouts.
