COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (21-11 overall, 9-10 Big Ten) dropped a 3-1 (25-19, 25-10, 21-25, 25-22) decision at 15th-ranked Minnesota (23-8, 13-6) Friday night in the Sports Pavilion. OSU’s Emily Danks and Minnesota’s Lauren Gibbemeyer shared match-high honors with 14.5 points each. Danks collected 11 kills (.435), two ace serves and three assist blocks while Gibbemeyer recorded 11 kills (.455), two solo blocks and three assist blocks.
The first set saw eight ties and five lead changes. OSU trailed, 14-11, before a kill from Danks, a Danks-Kelli Barhorst block and a Sarah Mignin ace serve tied the set at 14. Two OSU errors and kills from Katherine Harms and Gibbemeyer gave Minnesota an 18-14 lead. The Golden Gophers held the lead reaching set point at 24-18 with a Tabi Love kill. The Buckeyes stopped the set point at 24-19 with a kill from Anna Szerszen. Minnesota won the set, 25-19, with a Tori Dixon kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Gophers hit .226 in the set to .118 for Ohio State.
An Allie Schwarzwalder kill and a Danks-Barhorst block opened set two to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead. At 3-1, two Buckeye errors tied the set at three. Minnesota, with an OSU error, a Gibbemeyer-Mia Tabberson block and a Gibbemeyer kill took a 6-3 lead. The Gophers held the lead at 15-10 when the Gophers scored 10 consecutive points to win the set, 25-10, with a Gibbemeyer-Tabberson block to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Minnesota hit .259 for the set to -.212 for the Buckeyes.
Trailing, 2-1, OSU tied the third set at 2-2 with a kill from Schwarzwalder. A Gibbemeyer-Tabberson block and an Ashley Wittman ace serve gave the Gophers a 4-2 lead. At 7-5, Minnesota, a Katie Dull kill and a Minnesota error tied the set at seven. Six ties later the set was 13-all. Kills from Barhorst and Dull and a Gopher error gave Ohio State a 16-13 lead. At 21-18, kills from Szerszen and Barhorst expanded the OSU lead to 23-18. Two OSU errors and a block from Dixon cut the Buckeye lead to two at 23-21. A Minnesota error gave Ohio State set point at 24-21. The Buckeyes, with a Dull kill, won the set 25-21 to cut the Minnesota lead to 2-1. Ohio State hit .406 in the set to .222 for the Gophers.
The Buckeyes took the early lead in set four at 10-6. Two OSU errors and a block by Gibbemeyer made it 10-9. Trailing, 15-13, a Dixon kill and two Buckeye errors tied the set at 15. An OSU error and a kill from Harms gave Minnesota a 17-15 lead. At 22-18, an ace serve from Jessica Granquist and a kill from Love made it match point at 24-18. A Szerszen kill stopped the first match point at 24-19. A Barhorst-Szerszen block stopped the second match point at 24-20 forcing a Minnesota time out. A Gopher error stopped the third match point at 24-21. OSU stopped a fourth match point at 24-22 with a kill from Danks forcing a second Minnesota time out. The Gophers, with a kill from Love, won the set at 25-22 to win the match, 3-1. In the set, Ohio State hit .135 to .100 for Minnesota.
For the match, Minnesota hit .194 to .110 for Ohio State. The Gophers had a 52-44 advantage in kills and a 49-42 margin in assists. Tabberson posted a match-high 44 assists for Minnesota while Betsy Hone had 39. Each squad recorded four ace serves with OSU’s Danks and Minnesota’s Harms sharing match-high honors with two each. Defensively, the Gophers had a 56-52 edge in digs. Minnesota’s Granquist posted a match-high 14 digs with OSU’s Susan Halverson recording 12. At the net, Ohio State had a 12-9 advantage in team blocks. Barhorst collected a match-high seven assist blocks for the Buckeyes while Gibbemeyer recorded five total blocks for Minnesota with two solos and three assist blocks.
Ohio State closes out the regular season at 8 p.m. ET Saturday in Carver-Hawkeye Arena when the Buckeyes face the Iowa Hawkeyes (7-21, 2-17).
