COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team fell, 3-0, against FIU Sunday night to conclude action at the 12th-annual Wolstein Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 1-1-0 overall, while the Panthers improve to 1-0-1 in 2017. FIU was named champions of the Wolstein Soccer Classic.
PANTHERS CONTROL PACE IN THE FIRST HALF
FIU controlled the first half of play holding possession for much of the opening 45 minutes and limiting the Buckeye chances. The Panthers scored the lone goal of the half in the seventh minute when Luca Giovine lined in a shot to the back left corner of the net off a one-touch shot from the right side of the 18 yard box. The assist was from Inigo Sagarduy.
The Buckeyes had one shot on goal in the half coming off of a Kevin Blackwood laser to the top left corner of the net from 20 yards out, which was saved by FIU goalkeeper Hugo Fauroux.
EARLY SECOND-HALF FIU SCORE
The Panthers jumped out to a two-goal lead to begin the second half. Alessandro Campoy scored from six yards out from the left side for his first goal of the year. Sagarduy earned his second assist of the match.
THIRD PANTHER GOAL
Campoy continued to give the Ohio State backline problems when he scored his second goal of the match in the 59th minute. He received a nearside cross from Sagarduy and made a one-touch spin move, burying a goal into the back right of the net for the three-goal lead. It also marked Sagarduy’s third assist of the evening.
Ohio State continues it four-game homestand with two matches next week in Columbus. The Buckeyes host Lehigh at 7:30 p.m. ET Sept. 1 and Wright State at 7 p.m. ET Sept. 4.
