Buckeyes Drop Regular Season Finale to No. 12 Northwestern, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team closed out the regular season with a 4-2 loss to No. 12 Northwestern Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The No. 31 Buckeyes are now 13-7 overall and finish Big Ten play with a 7-4 record.

Seniors Olivia Sneed and Anna Sanford were recognized before the match, greeted by their teammates and coaches who presented them with framed jerseys.

Next up, the squad heads to Minneapolis for the Big Ten Tournament, which kicks off Thursday. Ohio State has secured a Top 6 spot and first round bye, opening action Friday. The final bracket will be announced Monday.

In Doubles
Northwestern won the doubles point. The tandem of Julie Byrne and Rheeya Doshi won 6-2 over Buckeyes Danielle Wolf and Maria Tyrina on court three.

On court one in a matchup of ranked teams, No. 4-ranked Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp of Northwestern came from a break down to top No. 39-ranked Anna Sanford and Shiori Fukuda, 6-4.

The court two match, with Buckeyes Olivia Sneed and Mary Beth Hurley facing No. 31-ranked Alex Chatt and Lee Or was suspended with the Wildcat duo ahead 5-4.

In Singles
The Buckeyes fell into a 3-0 hole with the Wildcats winning the first two singles matches off the court.

On court four, Buckeye Danielle Wolf fell to Julie Byrne, 6-1, 6-3, and on court five Ohio State’s Emma DeCoste dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match to Alex Chatt.

Shiori Fukuda put Ohio State on the board, topping No. 70-ranked Maddie Lipp, 6-4, 6-1, on court two. Mary Beth Hurley followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Inci Ogut on court six for a 3-2 team score.

The match came down to two matches that went to a third set, with Buckeye senior Anna Sanford facing Erin Larner on court one and senior Olivia Sneed taking on Lee Or on court three.

In her match, Sneed won the first set, 6-4, before the Wildcat forced a third set with a 6-2 victory. In the third, Sneed was down 2-5 but won back-to-back games to draw to 4-5. Or broke Sneed’s run and served out the set (6-4) to clinch the team victory.

On court one, Sanford, ranked 56th, won the first set 6-4 against No. 39 Larner, who claimed the second, 6-2. In the third, Larner was up a break, serving 5-4 when the team match was clinched and play was called.
