BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — McKayla Conti exploded for six goals as the Ohio State University women’s lacrosse team got back on track with a 14-13 win over the Binghamton University Bearcats on Friday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
The Buckeyes struck first with a goal from Baley Parrott just over two minutes into the game. Binghamton tied the game, 1-1, with a Rebecca Golderman goal with 24:53 remaining in the first half. Just over a minute later Alyssa Amorison put the Buckeyes in front again with a goal, just to see Tiffany Ryan score another equalizer for the Bearcats. As the snow flurries picked up at the Bearcats Sports Complex, the offensive output picked up too as Molly Wood scored her eighth goal of the season, followed by goals from Parrott and Sara Dickinson to put OSU up 5-2. Jaqueline Kennedy ended the OSU run with a goal for the Bearcats, making it 5-3 Buckeyes with 19:59 left in the first half.
As the Binghamton attack increased, Jill Rizzo and the OSU defense stepped up to hold the Bearcats scoreless for a little over nine minutes. With 10:40 left in the half, Conti found the back of the net to extend the Ohio State lead, 6-3. The Bearcats went on a run, cutting the OSU lead down to one, 6-5, before Conti scored again to give the Buckeyes another two-goal cushion, 7-5 with 8:08 left in the half. Brianne Arthur scored for the Bearcats with 3:58 to play in the half, and Ryan scored with 21 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 7-7 heading into halftime.
The Bearcats continued their run in the opening moments of the second half as Kennedy and Golderman both scored to give the Bearcats a 9-7 lead. Parrott scored to end the Binghamton run and kick-start a run for the Buckeyes. Still down one, 9-8, Conti rattled off three unanswered goals to put the Buckeyes up 11-9, with 20:05 left in the game. The Bearcats would not go quietly into the night, however, as Arthur ended the OSU run with a goal to make it 11-10. Back-to-back goals from Parrott and Conti pushed the lead back to three, 13-10, with 15:30 remaining in the game.
Ohio State faced a furious attack from the Bearcats over the last quarter of the game, triggered by Paige Volkmann’s goal to cut the lead to two, 13-11, at the 13:26 mark. Lindsay Epstein scored for the Buckeyes to give them a 14-11 lead with 9:28 to play, Binghamton used goals from Golderman and Arthur to cut into the lead, but in the end Rizzo and the OSU defense stepped up to secure the 14-13 win.
Conti finished with a season high six goals, her highest total as a Buckeye and tying her career total set against Vermont when she was at Louisville. Parrott scored four goals while coming away with three draw controls and one caused turnover. Wood tallied six draw controls, tied for the game high, and brought herself just 10 draw controls away from the all-time program record. The senior also scored a goal. Rizzo withstood the Bearcat’s attack, notching 10 saves on the night while scooping up three ground balls. Shannon Rosati stepped up for the OSU defense, leading the team with four caused turnovers. She also tallied five draw controls and came up with three ground balls. Anna Seanor led the Buckeyes with four ground balls, and notched three caused turnovers in the win.
The Buckeyes won’t have to wait long to get back on the field as they take on the UMass Minutewomen on Sunday. The neutral site game is set for a Noon start at Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania.
