COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State hockey used two third period goals to break a 2-2 tie and claim a 4-2 win over Alaska-Fairbanks in Big Dipper Arena Friday evening. The game marked the opening of the CCHA season for both teams. Ohio State improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCHA. UAF falls to 0-1 overall and in the league.

The Buckeyes got two goals from junior forward Jean-Francois Dufour, including a late empty-netter to seal the game.

Sophomore Mike McCormick scored the game-winner late in the third period after taking a pass from Andre Signoretti and breaking free in front of the net. The goal came at 16:47.

Dufour got the scoring underway for OSU just over four minutes into the game. With the Buckeyes on the power-play, Louie Colsant grabbed a rebounded shot and sent a pass towards the blueline to Dufour. Dufour quickly dished to Crain, who sent the puck back to Dufour for a long one-timer slapshot.

Vinnie Grant scored Ohio State’s second goal late in the first period in four-on-four situation. The goal came at 18:34 in the first period and was assisted by Andre Signoretti and Ryan Jestadt. Signoretti finished the game with a +3 rating and three assists while recording over 28 minutes played.

Dufour’s used his speed to score the late empty-netter. With the Nanooks on the power-play and the goalie pulled, a pass from behind the OSU goal hit Ray Aho’s stick and bounced into the neutral zone. Dufour one a long race to the puck and scored easily.

Aho stopped 29-of-31 Alaska-Fairbanks in goal, improving to 2-0 on the season. UAF scored two goals in the second period, one on the power-play and one in an even-strength situation.

The Nanooks outshot the Buckeyes, 31-27. OSU went 1-8 on the power-play, while UAF connected on 1-9 power play attempts.
