Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State defeated Akron 9-4 in an exhibition softball game Friday evening at Buckeye Field, taking the lead with a seventh-inning rally and securing the win with a five-run eighth.
After a two-out triple to center field by Megan Coletta in the seventh inning, Vanessa Spears battled for a walk and then Akron intentionally walked Alicia Herron to load the bases. Caitlin Conrad singled sharply between first and second to drive in two runs.
Ohio State scored two runs in the third inning. Coletta reached on a lead-off walk, followed by a Spears single, both of them scoring after a Herron double.
The Buckeyes concluded the scoring in the eighth inning, when Katie Simonton reached first base on an error, moved to second and third on successive wild pitches, then scored on an RBI single by Taylor Watkins to right field. Alyson Mott, pinchrunning for Leesa Gresham, who walked to reach base, scored on a Maddy McIntyre double, and a Herron single brought McIntyre home. A Conrad double to centerfield scored Herron.
Akron’s first run came on a third-inning lead-off homer to left field by junior Cassie Gleisner. The Zips scored two more runs in the sixth inning. Taryn Allmon and Alex Helfrich reached on back-to-back bunt singles; they scored on bunts by Kellie Roudabush and Alissa Birkhimer. A Rachael Radcliffe sacrifice fly scored Iesha Mountain in the ninth.
Starter Mikayla Endicott pitched six innings, giving up four hits while striking out three. Melanie Nichols pitched two innings of relief, allowing only one hit while striking out two. Alex DiDomenico pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits.
Continuing a busy weekend of softball action, the Buckeyes play two games on both Saturday and Sunday in the 11th annual Collegiate Charity Classic at Fred Beekman Park. Ohio State faces Dayton at 1 p.m. Saturday and then takes on Toledo at 3 p.m.
On Sunday, Ohio State faces Ohio at 11 a.m. and plays Wright State at 1 p.m. Fifteen collegiate teams from throughout Ohio will participate in the event.
