COLUMBUS, Ohio — Members of the Ohio State men’s and women’s hockey teams visited Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio to deliver the stuffed animals collected at the annual Teddy Bear Toss.

The more than 1,000 stuffed animals were collected during a men’s and a women’s hockey game during the 2017-18 season, with fans throwing their donations on the ice following the first period. This was the eighth Teddy Bear Toss delivery, with the first collection in 2011.

“It was an amazing first time experience,” Ronnie Hein, men’s hockey junior, said “It’s really eye opening how incredible these little kids are about everything they have to go through and yet they still have smiles on their faces all day. It’s a great feeling when you go in to do something for them and they can have the same impact on you.”

At Ronald McDonald House (the largest RMH in the United States), the Buckeyes visited with families and played games with the children while handing out the stuffed animals. The abundance of stuffed animals leaves Ronald McDonald House with bears, elephants, unicorns and more to distribute for many months (perhaps until it’s time for the delivery of the 2018-19 collection).

“Delivering the teddy bears to RMH is something I look forward to every year,” women’s hockey senior Erin Langermeier said. “Seeing the smiles of the faces of the kids when they pick ‘the one’ is what it’s all about.”

Both the men’s and women’s hockey programs reached the NCAA Frozen Four following second-place finishes in their respective leagues during the regular season. The men were 26-10-5 overall, with the women posting a 24-11-4 mark.

The men’s and women’s hockey programs join a larger scope of Ohio State student-athletes, coaches and corporate community partners aimed at making an impact in Central Ohio and beyond.
