COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team defeated West Virginia, 2-1, in a preseason exhibition Sunday afternoon on Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The match was the first of two exhibitions scheduled for the Buckeyes. The team travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., to play Marquette at 6:15 p.m. Friday before opening the regular season with the ninth-annual Wolstein Classic Aug. 29-31 in Columbus.  

 

In his first opportunity as a Buckeye, freshman forward Marcus McCrary did not disappoint. The native of Madison, Wis., McCrary led the Buckeyes in the first half, posting two goals for the Scarlet and Gray. Senior midfielder Ryan Ivancic foundMcCrary with space from 10 yards out from the near side, who rolled in the first goal into the back right of the net during the 15th minute. Ohio State continued to apply pressure to the Mountaineer defense. The team collected its second goal in the 40th minute when McCrary booted in a shot off the right post from 20 yards out following a deflected OSU shot attempt. At half, shots were 8-3 in favor of the Scarlet and Gray, including a 4-1 shots on goal advantage. Senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov played the first 45 minutes in net with one save.

 

The second-half lineup featured 11 new starters for the Buckeyes. Senior goalkeeper Andrian McAdams tallied three saves in the final 45 minutes. The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard during the 71st minute, scoring on a penalty kick. A total of 24 OSU players saw action in the contest, including nine newcomers. Overall, Ohio State held a 13-8 lead in shots.
