COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (11-7 overall, 6-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men’s volleyball team held off IPFW (7-8, 2-5) with a 3-2 (30-26, 30-21, 29-31, 24-30, 15-12) victory Saturday night at the Gates Sports Center. OSU’s Shawn Sangrey posted a match-high 28 points with 24 kills, one ace serve and six assist blocks. John Klanac added 18 points for the Buckeyes with 15 kills, one ace serve, one assist block and two assist blocks. Mastodon Darryl Shank recorded a team-high 27.5 points with 24 kills and seven assist blocks. Elon Fyfield contributed 14.5 points with 11 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and three assist blocks.
Ohio State opened game one with two kills from Sangrey, one from Klanac and a Mike Stefani ace serve for a 4-0 lead. IPFW closed to two points several times, the last at 13-11, before two Mastodon errors, a Grayson Overman kill and an ace serve from Klanac opened a 17-11 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching game point on a Sangrey kill at 29-25. A Fyfield kill stopped the game point at 29-26. Klanac, with a kill, ended the game, 30-26, for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .361 for the game to .312 for IPFW.
An Oliver Kook kill gave IPFW a 1-0 lead in game two. OSU, with a Kevin Heine kill tied the game at one. A Stefani ace serve and a Mastodon error opened a 3-1 Buckeye lead. After an OSU error made it 3-2, kills from Heine, Overman and Sangrey and three IPFW errors gave Ohio State a 9-2 lead. The Buckeyes reached game point at 29-17 with a Mastodon error. IPFW scored the next four points with a Garrett Bitter kill and three OSU errors to trail, 29-21. Ohio State won the game, 30-21, with a Klanac kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .182 for the game to -.103 for IPFW.
Kills from Stefani and Sangrey opened game three to give OSU a 2-0 lead. With IPFW trailing, 23-19, two Corey Frain kills, a Jonathan Meyer block and a Meyer-Frain block tied the game at 23. A Meyer kill gave IPFW a 24-23 lead. Sangrey tied the game with a kill at 24-all. A Steven Kehoe kill gave OSU a 25-24 lead. A Fyfield kill tied the game at 25. OSU took a 26-25 lead with an Overman kill. A Stefani kill and an IPFW error gave OSU a 28-25 lead. The Mastodons responded with kills from Myer and Corey Stewart and a Kook-Stewart block to tie the game at 28. An OSU error gave IPFW game point at 29-28. The Buckeyes stopped the game point at 29-29 with a Heine kill. The Mastodons took a 30-29 lead with a Kook kill and were serving their second game point. IPFW, with a Shank kill, won the game, 31-29, to cut the OSU match lead to 2-1. The Mastodons hit .351 to .318 for OSU.
IPFW opened game four with a 3-0 lead off a Kook kill, a Stewart-Frain block and a Shank-Frain block. At 7-4, OSU kills from Klanac, Stefani and Sangrey tied the game at seven. Tied at 13, a Sangrey kill and an IPFW error gave OSU a 15-13 lead. Down 17-15, IPFW tied the game at 17 with a Meyer kill and an OSU error. The run continued with two Shank kills and two Kook-Shank blocks for a 21-17 lead. The Mastodons held the lead reaching game point at 29-24 with a Kook-Fyfield block. A Buckeye error gave IPFW a 30-24 win tying the match at two games each. IPFW hit .314 for the game to .059 for the Buckeyes.
Game five opened with back-to-back kills from Sangrey for a 2-0 OSU lead. An OSU error and a Shank kill tied the game at two. A kill from Sangrey and an IPFW error made it 4-2, OSU. Two Buckeye errors tied the game at four. Kills from Klanac and Shank made it five-all. A Fyfield kill and a Mastodon error tied the game at six. OSU took an 8-6 lead with kills from Sangrey and Klanac. A Frain solo block made it 8-7. Kills from Sangrey and Fyfield moved the score to 9-8 OSU. Kills from Klanac and Jonathan Meyer made it 10-9 Buckeyes. An IPFW error and a Shank kill moved the score to 11-10 OSU. A Sangrey kill and a Shank-Frain block gave Ohio State a 12-11 lead. Heine, with a kill gave OSU a 13-11 lead. The Buckeyes reached match point at 14-11 with an Overman-Klanac block. IPFW stopped the match point with a Fyfield kill at 14-12. An IPFW service error ended the game at 15-12 for OSU giving the Buckeyes a 3-2 victory. Ohio State hit .240 for the game to .161 for the Mastodons.
For the match, Ohio State hit .238 to .201 for IPFW. The Buckeyes had a 75-62 kill advantage and a 71-59 margin in assists. Kehoe posted a match-high 63 assists with Stewart recording 38 for IPFW. OSU had a 5-3 edge in ace serves with Stefani posting a match-high three for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up 19 service errors to 18 for IPFW. Defensively, Ohio State had a 62-51 margin in digs with OSU’s Mik Berzins posting a match and career-high 26. At the net, the Mastodons had a 21.5 to 12 advantage in team blocks. Frain recorded a match-high 10 total blocks for IPFW with a solo and nine assist blocks.
Ohio State returns to St. John Arena Sunday for a 4 p.m. match against Mt. Olive (6-1). Admission is free.
