Ohio State opens season next Saturday at Windy City Invitational
COLUMBUS, Ohio – With alumni, friends and family gathered in St. John Arena Saturday afternoon, the Ohio State men’s gymnastics team put on a show at the Varsity Exhibition Saturday, its final tune-up before the start of the 2010 season.
Competing of floor for the Buckeyes were Elliott Hardy, Blaize Monks, Shachar Tal, Philip Onorato, Brandon Wynn and Justin Myers. Seniors Tal and Myers notched the team’s best scores.
On pommel horse, three freshmen gained competition experience in Neil Zyburt, Michael Newburger and John Laing. Sophomores Matt Rayl and Steven Spencer hit team highs while Michael Bell and Mike Behles also participated. For the alumni, Tony Duong returned to the event he specialized on for three seasons as a Buckeye.
Moving on to rings, the Buckeyes were led by sophomores Behles and Onorato. Also competing on the event were Sean Regan, Tai Lee and Tal. Suiting up for the alumni was Dr. Michael Canales who made the highlight reel with his set, including a stuck dismount.
Only Hardy and Monks did vaults for the varsity team, each doing a swell job.
Myers and Wynn received rounds of applause from the crowd for their routines on parallel bars. Spencer, Regan, Behles, Lee, Onorato and Tal also took a round on the event while former Buckeye DJ Bucher refused to take a swing, much to the dismay of the varsity team.
Myers and Wynn also earned the team’s high marks on high bar while Monks, Regan and Lee also competed.
After the meet, the varsity team and alumni had a meet and gret, while the announcement of the 2010 captains has been postponed to a later date.
The Buckeyes open their 2010 season at the 40th-annual Windy City Invitational hosted by UIC at 8 p.m. EST Jan. 16 in Chicago.
