PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Head coach Geoff Carlston recorded the 400th win of his 18-year career when the Ohio State women’s volleyball team cruised to a three-set (25-21, 25-12, 25-17) victory on the road at Rutgers on Wednesday night. The Buckeyes (14-12, 7-8 B1G) completed the home-and-home season sweep of the Scarlet Knights (5-22, 0-15 B1G).
Making the second start of her career, Becca Mauer dished a career-high 32 assists. The rookie setter also chipped in four kills, four digs and three blocks, all career marks. Ashley Wenz earned her second double-double of the 2017 campaign with 13 kills and 12 digs. Luisa Schirmer hit .500 on the night as she connected on 10-of-18 swings with a single miscue. Ana Beatriz Franklin covered the back row for 13 digs while Lauren Witte notched five kills and three blocks. Madison Smeathers and Ayanna Swan posted five kills apiece.
As a team, the Buckeyes held the Scarlet Knights to a hitting percentage of .125 (27-15-96). Carlston improved to 8-0 all-time against Rutgers.
SET 1: It was close to start the match as the two teams tied the score seven times. The Buckeyes separated themselves from the Scarlet Knights with an 8-2 run. Rutgers bounced back with the next six points to lock things at 16-all. Three straight OSU points sent the Scarlet Knights to their bench and the Buckeyes went on to take the set, 25-21.
SET 2: The second stanza was all about the Scarlet & Gray, who jumped out to a 14-8 advantage. Rutgers called for time as it trailed 19-10. Ohio State recorded the last four points of the set thanks to a pair of errors by the Scarlet Knights, an ace from Wenz and kill by Smeathers, 25-12.
SET 3: The Buckeyes converted at a .395 clip (18-3-38) in the third frame. The squad opened the set with seven unanswered points and doubled up for a 10-5 lead. Rutgers pulled within four, 19-15, but OSU got the job done for a 25-17 triumph.
Ohio State is back on the road to challenge Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 9 p.m. ET.
