Buckeyes cruise at the Zero Waste Jessica Beck Memorial Tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Synchronized Swimming team shined on Senior Day at the Zero Waste Jessica Beck Memorial meet inside of McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Saturday. The Buckeyes dominated their competition, winning with a score of 93, and toppled Michigan (64) and Lindenwood (51).

After the Buckeyes’ 8 seniors were honored prior to the meet, the trio of Wenjing Deng, Rachel Jager, & Stephanie Thielemann kicked off the events with a winning score of 78.0667. They were followed closely by the trio of Alyssa Hoying, Noelle St. John, & Monica Velasquez-Stiak who posted a score of 77.3333 to finish in second.

In the duet, Hoying and Velazquez-Stiak stunned with a terrific performance and a score of 81.5333 to take first in the event. Just behind were the duos of Rachel Warren & Shea Ramsey and Phoebe Coffin & Lizzie Walsh who scored 72.8000 and 72.6667 to capture 3rd and 4th places respectively.

In the solo routines, Laila Huric and Breanna Malone were phenomenal. Their scores of 78.5667 and 76.5000 scores were enough to take first and second in the event. As the road to Arizona continues, these young stars continue to shine brightly for the Buckeyes.

The highlight of the day came at the end of the competition as the Buckeyes’ showcased their team routines for the first time in 2018. The Scarlet squad of Deng, Hoying, Huric, Jager, Meredith-LeRoux, St. John, Thielemann, & Velasquez-Stiak won the event with a score of 81.5333. The Gray team of Giannuzzi, Welzien, Malone, Lizzie Walsh, Ramsey, Stehlik, Torba, & Warren finished second at 78.3000 to take second.

In addition to these great performances, Ohio State completed its second Zero Waste event of the season on Saturday. We are proud to announce that OSU successfully diverted nearly 79% of waste from landfills during the event. We appreciate everyone’s attendance and cooperation with our Zero Waste efforts, and we are excited about this huge step to reaching our goal of 90% diversion rate

Next, the Buckeyes will hit the road for the first time this season when it heads to Virginia to face Richmond on Saturday, February 10, and William and Mary on Sunday, February 11.
