COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s tennis team finished the second half of its doubleheader with a 7-0 win over Cleveland State at home at the Varsity Tennis Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes’ matches vs. Xavier and Cleveland State, both shutout victories, opened the 2010 dual campaign for Ohio State.
“I was pleased to see the younger players get two matches in today,” Chuck Merzbacher, Ohio State head coach, said. “Both teams played well and it was good to get the doubles teams a couple extra matches. Since it was the first match of the season, it was good for the players to get the nerves out and get ready for the rest of the season.”
The Buckeyes, looking for their second clean sweep of the day, entered doubles competition after going 3-0 earlier in the day. The top Buckeye tandem of Cami Hubbs and Kelsey Haviland battled to an 8-4 victory over Cleveland State’s Catrine Bjerrehus and Charlotte Gibbons at No. 1.
At the number two spot, senior Kirsten Flower and freshman Gabby Steele shut down Nicole Janek and Sanda Bjelan en route to an 8-1 win for the Scarlet and Gray.
The freshman duo of Fidan Manashirova and Kara Cecil defeated Maria Lazaris and Denisa Muntean in an 8-4 decision at No. 3.
Flower kept the wins coming for the Buckeyes at the top spot in singles with a win over Bjerrehus 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2, Kelsey Haviland defeated Lazaris handily 6-1, 6-1.
At the third spot, Steele and Janek put on a show for the crowd. Steele marched to a quick 5-0 lead in the first set before winning 6-1. Janek showed her skill early in the second set, matching Steele’s first-set 5-0 lead. The freshman battled back, winning seven straight games to finish the match 6-1, 7-5.
Manashirova, playing at the fourth spot, ended any doubt of a comeback in her match with Bjelan, quickly winning 6-0, 6-0. Hubbs finished strong with a win over Gibbons, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5. Cecil rounded up the lineup, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Muntean at the sixth position.
Ohio State is now 10-2 in season opening doubleheaders since 2002.
The Buckeyes will be back in action Saturday with two matches in Columbia, Mo. Ohio State will take on Memphis at 2 p.m. ET in a neutral-site match and then will face the host Missouri Tigers at 7 p.m. ET.
