COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team downed New Hampshire, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink for a series sweep of the Wildcats. Ohio State (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) defeated New Hampshire (0-3-0, 0-1-0 Hockey East) Friday in the series opener.
Senior forward Danielle Gagne started the Buckeyes off on a strong note, with a goal at the 12:16-mark in the first period. Sophomore Katie Matheny and junior Melani Moylan assisted on the play. Ohio State continued to build momentum on the offensive end, with back-to-back scores from senior Kayla Sullivan and sophomore Alexa Ranahan. With a 3-0 lead, the Buckeyes concluded the period with an 11-7 advantage in shots. Freshman goalie Kassidy Sauve, earning her second career start, recorded seven saves for the stanza.
The Wildcats rebounded in the second, with a goal from Cassandra Vilgrain halfway through the period. New Hampshire continued putting pressure on the Buckeye defensive unit with a short-handed goal at 15:49. Unable to counter the attack, Ohio State saw their previous three-goal lead dwindle to 3-2 at the end of second period.
Moving on to the third, New Hampshire tied the game, 3-3, with an unassisted goal from Amy Boucher. With overtime looming, the Buckeyes answered off a gritty play from sophomore Claudia Kepler. Set up by teammates Julia McKinnon and Kendall Curtis, Kepler scored the game-winner with 32 seconds remaining on the clock.
For the game, Ohio State outshot New Hampshire 30-25. Sauve was credited for 22 saves in the contest.
The Buckeyes will travel to Madison, Wis. to open conference play Oct. 10. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:07 p.m. (ET). The series with the Badgers will continue Sunday with a 2:07 p.m. (ET), once again a road contest for the Scarlet and Gray.
