Buckeyes Bring the Energy to Open Fall Camp

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Guided by first-year head coach Brian Maisonneuve, the Ohio State men’s soccer team opened its preseason camp this week. The 28-man squad met for the first time with the coaching staff Tuesday morning in the locker room at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. See below for a video of Maisonneuve welcoming the team.

“It’s been a long wait, but it’s great to finally get the season started,” Maisonneuve said. “We addressed the guys three months back in April, but to get out of here and see these guys getting after it, I was so impressed with the focus, energy and attitude. Everybody came to play. Overall, I couldn’t be happier.”

The squad held its first training session on a Wednesday rainy morning at the upper practice fields located behind Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Maisonneuve directed the group through a fitness test and the first team training session. The Buckeyes bring back 14 letterwinners and six starters from the 2017 group that finished 8-10-1 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play. The team welcomed seven newcomers this week.

With just five days until the home exhibition vs. Creighton, the main focus of camp early on? Team defense.

“Team defending. Everybody says it, but defense wins championships. We have to do better on the defensive side of the ball and we need to get on the same page and organize quickly. We don’t have much time, but our team defending will turn into good attacking shape. With a new staff, again, they did a great job last year, but we are going to do things a little bit different. For everyone to get on the same page, it’s not an easy task, but team defending is job No. 1.”

Ohio State will be led by a four-member senior class that includes, Brady Blackwell, Michael Prosuk, Alex Nichols and Michael Dichlian.

“With a new coaching staff, we’ve been relying on the upperclassmen on how things were done in the past and they’ve been terrific. Their leadership during these first training sessions has been excellent.”

The Buckeyes open the 2018 regular season hosting the Wolstein Classic Aug. 24-26 in Columbus. Ohio State faces Furman in the opener at 7 p.m. Aug. 24 and take on Hofstra at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 26. Admission is free to all Buckeye soccer home matches. Click here for the full 2018 schedule.
