Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team easily dispatched Cleveland State, 7-0, Sunday at the Jesse Owens Recreation Center. The Buckeyes (4-2, 1-0 Big Ten) previously defeated Nebraska Friday and Yale earlier Sunday, giving them a perfect 3-0 record for the weekend. Lindsay Williams (Sr., Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) led OSU with 3-0 records in both singles and doubles play.
For the third consecutive match the No. 48 ranked Buckeyes swept doubles action, 3-0. The duo of Williams and Meaghan Colville (Sr., Toronto, Ontario/Western Michigan) completed a 3-0 weekend with an 8-1 victory over Morgan Ungerott and Sarah Galon at the No. 1 spot. Lindsey Adams (Jr., Mercer Island, Wash./ Mercer Island) and Meredith Vincent (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Virginia Tech) beat Paulina Reyes and Marcella Capozziello in the No. 2 position, 8-0, and Kristin Messmer (Fr., Lutherville, Md./McDonogh) and Emily DeCamilla (Jr., Sacramento, Calif./Maryland) completed the sweep with an 8-0 shutout of Amanda Cerny and Rebekah Bicksler at No. 3.
The Buckeyes were just as dominant in singles play, as Williams beat Galon at No. 1, 6-4, 6-0, Adams shut out Ungerott, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2, and Messmer defeated Reyes, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 3 position. At the No. 4-6 spots, three Buckeyes earned their first singles wins of the spring season, all by shutout. Vincent topped Bicksler at No. 4, Sonia Ruzimovsky (Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical) defeated Capozziello at No. 5 and Lindsay Bryan stopped Cerny at No. 6.
Ohio State head coach Chuck Merzbacher said he was happy with his team’s performance before setting out on a 10 match road trip.
“It was nice to get three wins before going on the road,” Merzbacher said. “I’m excited and I think the team is excited about the upcoming matches.”
The Buckeyes return to action against Wake Forest at 1 p.m. Feb. 28 and No. 17 ranked William and Mary at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 29 at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center in Williamsburg, Va.
