COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team opened the 2011 season with a 4-3 victory against Detroit Thursday night inside Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Ohio State defense limited Detroit to just three goals and 16 shots, with freshman goalie Greg Dutton making six saves in his first career game. Buckeye senior Tyler Dolphin had the gamewinner in the fourth quarter, breaking a 3-all tie, set up by classmate Zach Boyt.
Ohio State has a quick turnaround, as it hosts Mercer at 1 p.m. Saturday in Woody Hayes Athletic Center. A video webcast of the game will be available for a fee through Buckeye Vision on OhioStateBuckeyes.com, with live stats also available on the site.

“Defensively we played a great game. I’m proud of the way our freshman goalie played,” Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. “Offensively we have a lot of work to do. We kind of allowed what they were doing to get to us a bit. We had some great shooting opportunities and scoring opportunities and just didn’t capitalize.”

The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 after the first quarter. Sophomore Nick Liddil found the back of the net for his first career goal and point, opening the scoring just 1:13 into the contest. Detroit scored twice in the final 4:31 to tie the game and take the lead. Matt Gregson deadlocked the score at 1, followed by a goal from Tim Lehto at 2:18. Detroit goalie A.J. Levell had four saves in the quarter.
Sophomore Logan Schuss scored a man-up goal, assisted by classmate Dominique Alexander, with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter to send the teams into halftime tied at 2-all.
At 9:26 of the third Schuss found Smail, who scored from the right of the cage to put Ohio State ahead, 3-2. The Buckeyes held the lead until Alex Maini tallied off a rebound for the Titans with 1:16 left in the third quarter.
Seniors Zach Boyt and Tyler Dolphin combined for the gamewinner, with Dolphin scoring with 4:44 remaining in regulation.  Detroit took a timeout with 2:37 remaining and the Buckeyes’ Keenan Ochwat forced a turnover, allowing the Buckeyes to clear the ball into the offensive zone and run the clock down to hold on for the win.
Ohio State outshot Detroit, 23-16, in the contest. Both starting goalies played all 60 minutes. Freshman Greg Dutton started the game for the Buckeyes and made six saves in his first collegiate game. Levell had eight stops for the Titans. The three goals allowed by the Buckeyes were the fewest since an 8-2 victory over Quinnipiac March 28, 2009.
Rookie Shawn Kaplan took all 11 faceoffs for the Buckeyes, winning six.
Ohio State converted one of four man-up chances and held the Titans scoreless on five opportunities.
