COLUMBUS, Ohio – Shelby McCombs, a pitcher who spent her freshman year at Louisville, has transferred to Ohio State and will be a member of the Buckeyes’ softball program, head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly announced today.
“I’ve followed Shelby throughout her career since she was 13 years old with the Lasers and know that she is a fierce competitor with power both on the mound and at the plate,” said Kovach Schoenly. “It’s exciting to add Shelby to the staff as she has had success at a high level in the ACC. We hope she will draw from that experience as we aim to reach NCAAs this year.”
From Newark, Ohio and a graduate of Licking Valley High School, McCombs went 10-5 last year for the Cardinals with a 2.87 ERA in 105 innings. She struck out 69 batters while compiling five complete games and two shutouts. On May 5, she was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week after week after picking up two wins in a weekend series versus Pittsburgh, allowing a total of just one run over 12 innings. McCombs finished second on the Cardinals squad in every major pitching category, including wins, innings, strikeouts, and opposing batting average (.263).
“Having the opportunity to play for the Ohio State is a huge blessing,” said McCombs. “Being able to come back home and to wear Ohio State across my chest will be more than I could ever imagine. I’m incredibly thankful to all of the coaches for giving me this opportunity. I know being able to play under an amazing coaching staff will only help me continue to grow as a player and a person mentally, physically and emotionally. I cannot wait to build relationships with all of the fans in the Buckeye State, and most importantly take on this journey with my new family and work towards a championship. I am so excited that I’m back home where my heart belonged all along.”
A standout at Licking Valley, McCombs was named the 2014 Newark Advocate Pitcher of the Year, Licking County League Player of the Year and Division II State Pitcher of the Year. In 2013, her Licking Valley team won the OHSAA Division II state title. Overall, she was an all-state selection three times and in 2014 was the Columbus Dispatch All-Metro Pitcher of the Year.
Playing for Lasers Gold, she won a national championship at the USA/ASA Fastpitch National Tournament in 2011. She finished her career with the Louisville Lady Sluggers. McCombs will be a sophomore for the Buckeyes in 2016.
