COLUMBUS, Ohio– Ohio State wrestler Tommy Rowlands (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Ready) recently was invited to compete in the 2001 National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star meet to be held Jan. 29 at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Rowlands also was honored Wednesday with the No. 1 ranking in the 285 pound weight class by Intermat.

“It is a great honor they selected me to be an all-star,” Rowlands said. “I am glad I will be able to represent Ohio State at the meet. It does feel good to be ranked No. 1, but I am more interested in being No. 1 when March rolls around (for the national championships).”

OSU head coach Russ Hellickson also is pleased Rowlands was selected.

“He has been steady, confident and very good for us all year,” Hellickson said. “These honors could put a burden on a young wrestler but I feel Tommy is capable of handling it because he has been so successful at all levels he has competed.”

The all-star meet selections were made by the NWCA selection committee with the intent to bring the Top 2 wrestlers in each weight class together to compete. If an invited wrestler cannot attend the meet, the committee then invites the next highest ranked wrestler. The official pairings for the event will be posted Monday at the NWCA’s web site, nwcaonline.com.
