COLUMBUS, Ohio – Jeff Tundo, afreshman attackman on the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, has been named the ECAC Lacrosse Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Tundo, a native of Orchard Park, N.Y., scored four goals and added an assist for the Buckeyes in their two games combined last week, including a hat trick in Ohio State’s win over Albany Saturday.
This is the third-consecutive week a Buckeye has won league rookie of the week honors, after Logan Schuss was honored March 1 and March 8 (co). Senior Mario Ventiquattro also has picked up ECAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week accolades (March 8), giving Ohio State four honors so far this season.
Tundo led the Buckeyes with a hat trick in the team’s win over 11-6 win over Albany Saturday, scoring back-to-back goals in the first half to break the one-all tie and give Ohio State a two-goal lead. His final goal came in the third quarter, putting Ohio State up 7-3. The hat trick matched his career high, set in his first career game against Villanova. He had four groundballs in the game to lead the Buckeye field players. Against Robert Morris on Tuesday, Tundo had a goal and an assist.
Tundo, who has at least one point in each game of his collegiate career, leads the Buckeyes with 11 goals and is second with 15 points this season.
Brandon Freeman, the Buckeyes’ senior goalie, was on the player of the week honor roll. He had a season-high 14 saves against Robert Morris and then posted 12 saves, allowing just six goals, in the win over Albany.
Ohio State (4-2) will be back in action Saturday when it heads to South Bend, Ind., for a non-conference game with No. 13-ranked Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
