Buckeye Spotlight – Riley Reist

March 27, 2017

Redshirt junior Riley Reist is in his fourth year with the men’s tennis team. One of the more colorful members of the team, Reist has appeared in 11 team matches and is undefeated in both singles and doubles. The Hamilton, Ohio native is a strategic communications major and was named Academic All-Big Ten last season.

How did you decide to come to OSU?
I decided to come to OSU because I wanted to be a part of a program with a winning tradition, and one that competes for Big Ten and National titles every year

How long have you been playing tennis?
I have been playing tennis since I was about 4 years old. From 4 to 11 I thought I was going to the NBA, but when I realized that wasn’t going to come true I started to really focus on tennis.

Do you have any pre-match superstitions or rituals?
Before any match I like to sit in the locker room and set my stop-watch to 43 minutes and 43 seconds, don’t ask, and listen to the intro song to Teletubbies on repeat. This helps me calm down and makes me able to focus during the warm-up.

What is the hardest thing about tennis?
I got a concussion from JJ Wolf when he hit me with a ball, many people think that getting a concussion is impossible in tennis, but impossible is my middle name. Mikael Torpegaard also has given me a black eye. So to sum it up the toughest thing is the contact involved.

How do you balance athletics and academics?
Balancing athletics and academics has been the most difficult thing thus far in my college experience. Coffee has been a huge help. It all comes down to time management and not watching shows on Netflix.

What is your major and why did you choose it?
I am a strategic communications major, I choose it because it’s a major where you can go into various different fields. I am still up in the air on what I would like to do, so if anyone has suggestions please shoot me an email.

What is your favorite study spot on campus?
Since my bedroom is off campus, I’d have to say Younkin wins the title as best study spot.

What is your favorite class you have taken here so far?
Crisis Comm with Lainer Holt, never a dull moment in that class.

What is a fun fact about you that not many people know about?
I’m not sure if this is a fun fact, but not many people know this. I am 21 years old, and I think I’m already beginning to bald. I love my hair, and I really don’t want to lose it. I rub green tea in my hair every night, and I’m trying to convince my parents into letting me get on a Rogaine regimen before it’s too late.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Definitely a Chik Fil A chicken sandwich. They also have the best sweet tea, so knocking out 2 birds with 1 stone.

Who do you most admire and why?
I would probably have to say my father Martin Reist. Everyone always asks me what happened to me because my Dad is way cooler than me. So I strive to be more like him every day.

Describe OSU in one word.
G.O.A.T (Does this count as one word?)

What was your favorite experience at OSU?
Winning the National Team Indoors my freshman year was super exciting.
