Anna Kirk is a senior third baseman on the Ohio State softball team, which will host Iowa this weekend in its final Big Ten series of the season. Kirk is batting .293 this year with six home runs, 23 RBI and a team-high 38 runs scored. She’s played in 197 career games for the Scarlet and Gray and is a three-time OSU Scholar Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection.
How did you decide to come to OSU?
I decided to come to Ohio State when I received the opportunity to continue my athletic career. I choose this school specifically for the education. The support behind Ohio State athletics is well known and has no bounds. I also am a hometown girl and I have always wanted to play on Buckeye Field wearing scarlet and gray.
How long have you been playing softball?
I have been playing softball since I can remember. I have an older sister who played so I have been around the game since I was little.
Do you have any pre-game superstitions or rituals?
Before the game starts, I find time to myself and devote it to my faith and take a moment and say a little prayer to myself.
What is the hardest thing about softball?
The hardest thing about softball is overcoming failure. The game is based on failing, so learning how to cope with failure and turn failure into motivation is what I admire about the sport.
How do you balance athletics and academics?
I balance athletics and academics very easily. I have a planner that helps me prioritize and stay on top of things that need to be done and when. I try to get my academics done ahead of time so I can focus on athletics.
What is your major and why did you choose it?
I chose Sport Industry because the Ohio States athletic program is know nationally and I knew I could accel in the industry and help impact people in a positive way.
What is your favorite study spot on campus?
My favorite study spot on campus is our locker room at Buckeye Field.
What is your favorite class you have taken here so far?
My favorite class I have take so far is my leadership classes because I want to impact people, so I am able to learn different ways to better myself and others.
What is a fun fact about you that not many people know about?
I enjoy shooting a bow and arrow in my free time away from my athletics, academics and family.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I would choose potatoes. There are so many different ways to cook a potato.
Who do you most admire and why?
There are many people and athletes I admire. I cannot pick just one person. I admire qualities from different people and athletes that has helped me develop into the person that I am today.
Describe Ohio State in one word.
What was your favorite experience at Ohio State?
My favorite experience at Ohio State would have to be visiting Bolivia [as part of Soles4Souls]. The opportunity to travel to South America with a group of people was on of the greatest times I have had here as a Buckeye.
