Sophomores-to-be Rachel Rohanna and Amy Meier card team score of 4-under 284

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In preparation for the upcoming season, two members of the Ohio State women’s golf team recently battled against the best pairings in college women’s golf and finished sixth at the Hooters Women’s Collegiate Team Championship in Dahlonega, Ga.

Buckeye sophomores-to-be Rachel Rohanna and Amy Meier competed together Aug. 3-5 on the par 72, 6,995-yard Achasta, By Reynolds golf course. The three-day tournament consisted of rounds of alternative shot, best ball and combined team score and the OSU duo finished with a total of 284 (-4).

The Wake Forest pair of Michelle Chin and Cheyenne Woods won the tournament by two strokes at 15-under.

With 53 two-person teams and 52 schools represented, Rohanna and Meier were the highest finishing Big Ten pair, missing fifth place by a stroke. Aimee Neff and Lindsey Solberg of Michigan State were next in the league with a tie for 14th at 3-over 291.

In round one, Rohanna and Meier concluded their first 18 holes with an even 72. Using an alternative shot format, they opened the tournament with a birdie on hole No. 10. Despite bogeys on hole Nos. 4, 9 and 15, the twosome found birdies on hole Nos. 1 and 6 to make par for the day.

During day two, the pair fired a 5-under 67 using a best ball set-up.  Both Rohanna and Meier carded a bogey on hole No. 3, but fired birdies on hole Nos. 4 and 14. Rohanna also added birdies on hole Nos. 5, 10, 13 and 17 to bring her total for the day to six.

In the final round of play, Rohanna and Meier combined for a team-total of 145. Meier made par with a round of 72, while Rohanna was one stroke back at 73. Opening with a bogey, Meier would go on to make par on 13-consecutive holes before firing an eagle on hole No. 15. Despite a double-bogey on No. 16, Meier ended the event strong with a birdie on her final hole. 

Rohanna also opened with a bogey, but secured four birdies on the front nine. Making the turn at 1-under, Rohanna found her fifth birdie of the day on hole No. 14 before posting a bogey and double-bogey on her last four holes.

Rohanna, Meier and the rest of the Buckeyes will kick-off the 2010-11 season Sept. 17-18 at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
