COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State rallied to beat the Youngstown State Penguins on a two-run home run by Mike Lockwood (Jr., Powell, OH) in the bottom of the ninth inning on Wednesday night. The Buckeyes hit a season high four home runs on the night including two by Lockwood. OSU improves to 23-7 (7-1 Big Ten) on the season while YSU falls to 7-23.
Lockwood hit his seventh home run of the season to lead off the game and the game winner was his eighth of the year. The junior outfielder had three hits in six at bats, scored two runs and knocked in three.
The Penguins jumped in front early on a two-run home run by Mark Thomas in the first inning. Greg Ensley started things off for Youngstown State with a one-out single and Thomas followed with his fifth home run of the season to make the score 2-0.
Ohio State answered in the home half of the inning with a pair of round trippers. Lockwood led off the bottom of the first with his fourth homer in the Buckeyes first at bat. After a single by Chad Ehrnsberger (So., Kalida, OH), Jason Turner (Jr., Versailles, OH) hit his fifth home run of the year to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead after one.
Neither team managed to score in the second, but Youngstown State collected four consecutive hits to start the third and scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead. Ensley and Thomas hit back-to-back singles to start off the inning. Ray Farcas followed with another single to score both runners. Eric Jones then singled to put runners on first and third. Buckeye pitcher Brandon Steen (Fr., Hendersonville, TN) threw away his pick-off attempt which allowed Farcas to score and Jones to advance to third. Andrew Clough followed with a sacrifice fly for the Penguins fourth run of the inning.
The Buckeyes came back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Ehrnsberger led off with his seventh double of the season. Turners fly ball to right advanced Ehrnsberger to third and Matt Middleton (Sr, Conover, OH) walked to put runners on the corners. Doug Dendinger (Fr., Greenwich, OH) knocked in Ehrnsberger and moved Middleton over to third with a single to right field. Joe Palazzos (Fr., Tucson, AZ) sacrifice fly scored Middleton to make the score 6-5 Youngstown State after three. After holding the Penguins scoreless in the top of the fourth, the Buckeyes picked up three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 8-6. Trent Mcllvain (So., Louisville, OH) got things started with a single to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Jason Trott (Sr., Dublin, OH) followed with a double down the left field line. Turner then grounded out to score Mcllvain and tie the score at six. Middleton came up next and hit his second home run of the season to put the Buckeyes up by two.
YSU chipped away at the Buckeye lead with a run in the top of the sixth. Todd Santore scored from third when Dendinger dropped a fly ball while setting up to make a throw.
Miscues hurt OSU in the top of the seventh. Mcllvain dropped a pop up by Clough as he slipped in the outfield grass. Pitcher Nate Smith (Fr., Bryan, OH) and catcher Chris Alvord (So., Mentor, OH) collided while fielding Andy Braggs bunt. That allowed Bragg to reach and Clough to move to third. Two batters later Santore singled to tie the score at eight. With the bases loaded Jason Lowman singled to put the Penguins ahead 9-8.
The Buckeyes remained down by one heading into the bottom of the ninth. Tom Durant (Sr., Columbus) singled with one out to set up Lockwoods game winner.
OSU next plays at Illinois on Friday in the first of a four-game weekend series.
