COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chase Buchanan and Justin Kronauge, members of the Ohio State men’s tennis team, advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., Wednesday. Buchanan and Kronauge will return to action at 10 a.m. Thursday.

The seventh- seed, Buchanan downed  Jean-Yves Aubone of Florida State 6-4, 6-2 and Kronauge handed  Aubone’s teammate Vahid Mirzadeh a 0-6, 6-1, 7-5 defeat.

Buchanan, a native of New Albany, Ohio, garnered his 30th win of the season with the victory Wednesday. He is one of three Buckeyes to amass 30 or more wins this season, joining Justin Kronauge (36-3) and junior Balazs Novak (37-7). A winner of 21 of his last 22 matches, the Big Ten Player of the Year, will take on Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt at 10 a.m. Thursday. Including the win against Aubone, Buchanan has won 17 of his 20 matches in straight sets.

After being shutout in the first set, 6-0, Kronauge, ranked 23rd in the ITA standings, executed an impressive rally, nearly serving a second-set goose egg (6-1) himself. The third and deciding set was much more dramatic, but the Buckeye from Dayton, Ohio, pulled out the victory, 7-5. Not only did Kronauge extend his win streak in singles to 25, he also became Ohio State’s career singles wins leader with 147 victories. The 2010 Midwest Region Farnsworth/ITA Senior Player of the Year accomplished this feat after already topping the program’s combined and doubles wins list earlier this season. Among his 36 wins, Kronauge has lost the first set just four times this season and owns a 3-1 record when he does so. Kronauge will face Oklahoma State’s and sixth seed Oleksandr Nedovyesov next.

In addition to continued action in the singles championship, Buchanan will pair with freshman and Rijeka, Croatia, native Dino Marcan in the 32-field doubles bracket at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Buckeye duo will open action against Auburn’s Tim Puetz and Alexander Stamchev. Ranked No. 9 in the country, Buchanan and Marcan are 20-3 overall and 11-2 vs. nationally-ranked opponents. Since defeating ninth-ranked tandem Austin Krajicek and Jeff Dadamo of Texas A&M in March, Buchanan and Marcan have entered the ITA rankings at No. 43 and have climbed 34 spots to No. 9.
