COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chase Buchanan, a sophomore on the No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday. It is Buchanan’s second-career conference weekly honor and it is the fifth time this season a Buckeye has been recognized. He won the award for the first time Feb. 9, along with senior co-captain Justin Kronauge (Feb. 2) and freshman Dino Marcan (Jan. 19 and Feb. 16).
Ohio State (10-1), which has collected four-consecutive weekly laurels, leads the Big Ten with five, followed by Michigan and Northwestern.
Buchanan, a native of New Albany, Ohio, defeated No. 8 Eric Quigley of Kentucky, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to help the Buckeyes defeat the Wildcats, 5-2, in Columbus. Paired with Justin Kronauge, Buchanan beat Wright State’s doubles tandem of Tore Waldhausen and Brian Dredge, 8-2 to cap the weekend.
With the help of Buchanan, the Buckeyes improved their home win-streak to 97-consecutive matches, which dates back to the 2003 season.
Buchanan, ranked 36th in the latest ITA singles polls, is 11-4 overall this year, including an impressive 7-1 mark at No. 1. Against nationally-ranked opponents, he is 5-4 and has won seven of his last 10 matches this season.
