COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brad Smith led the way for the Buckeyes in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic Sunday, finishing the first round tied for the lead on the par 72, 6,945-yard River Course at the Rio Mar Resort. Ohio State finished the day in 14th place, just one stroke back of 12th and two strokes behind 11th-place Texas.
The Buckeyes’ effort was led by the play of senior Smith. The Peru, Ind., native nailed four birdies on the day to just one bogey to keep pace with a field marked by four of the nation’s Top 10 players. Smith will head into the second round tied for the lead at 1-under.
Senior Michael Cress chipped in a solid performance, finishing with a 2-over 74. Cress notched a pair of bogeys and one birdie on his first four holes before settling into the round and finishing in a tie for 42nd place.
Bo Hoag was even or under par for much of the day, but a rough four-hole patch that included two bogeys and a double-bogey spelled trouble for the senior from Upper Arlington, Ohio. Hoag ended in a tie for 56th at 3-over 75. Junior Dan Charen closed out in a tie for 67th place while sophomore Zach Sobel tied for 70th.
Ohio State will tee off at 7 a.m. EST Monday for the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic.
