COLUMBUS, Ohio – With just 51 seconds remaining in the game, Ohio State senior defenseman Amber Bowman scored an extra-attacker goal as the Buckeyes rallied to tie Bemidji State 1-1 Saturday at Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. The tie extended OSU’s undefeated streak to five games. Ohio State took three of four points in the WCHA series to move to 2-5-2 in league games and 6-5-2 overall. The Beavers are 2-3-1 in the conference and 3-6-1 on the year.
The teams skated to scoreless first and second periods and Bemidji State outshooting OSU 9-5 and 9-8, respectively.
The Beavers broke the scoreless tie 11:19 into the third period with an even-strength goal by Franny Dorr. With time in regulation winding down, the Buckeyes pulled goaltender Erika Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) for an extra attacker. Just four seconds into the 6-on-5, the move proved successful as Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros) scored at 19:09 to even the game at 1-all. The lamplighter was her fifth of the season. Sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/St. Michael’s) assisted Bowman for her sixth helper of the season.
The goal increased Bowman’s point total to 13 to tie for the team lead. With the assist, Marziali has scored a point in five of the last six games. She is tied for second in points with 12.
Vanderveer stopped all four BSU shots faced in overtime to preserve the tie and finish the game with a total of 26 saves. She has allowed just four goals in the last five games while making 153 saves for a .974 save percentage during that time span. For the season, she is 5-2-1 with a 1.51 goals-against-average and .952 save percentage. Overall, Ohio State totaled 25 shots on goal while the Beavers had 27. The Buckeyes were 0-for-7 on the power play and Bemidji State was 0-for-2. OSU has not allowed an opponent to score on the power play for five games in a row, with a perfect 22-for-22 mark during those games.
The Buckeyes next return to Columbus to face North Dakota in a WCHA series Nov. 17 and 19 at OSU Ice Rink. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 12:07 p.m. Sunday.
