COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior defenseman Matt Borges has been named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today. He’s the fourth Buckeyes to earn a Big Ten weekly award in the last five weeks, joining Christian Feliziani (Specialist of the Week, Feb. 5), Jackson Reid (Freshman of the Week, Feb. 12) and Ryan Terefenko (Defensive Player of the Week, Feb. 20).

A junior from Garden City, N.Y., Borges picked up 10 ground balls and caused four turnovers in games last weekend against No. 18 Marquette and Detroit Mercy at the Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Pontiac, Mich. Against the Golden Eagles, Borges had five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers and then matched that performance less than 48 hours later against Detroit Mercy. With Borges’ help, Ohio State’s defense held Detroit Mercy scoreless for nearly 26 minutes over the third and fourth quarters. In that span, Ohio State’s offense scored five times as the Buckeyes defeated the Titans, 8-7.

On the season, Borges has 20 ground balls and a team-high six caused turnovers. His average of 3.33 ground balls/game ranks seventh in the conference and third amongst non-faceoff specialists. Since the start of the 2017 season, he’s started 27 consecutive games.

Borges and the rest of the Buckeyes will play their first game inside Ohio Stadium on Saturday when they host an NCAA Final Four rematch against Towson beginning at 4 p.m. The game will be televised live on BTN.
