Ohio State finishes ninth at annual league tournament

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Bo Hoag, a junior from Upper Arlington, Ohio, posted his third-consecutive top-10 finish at the Big Ten championships as the Ohio State men’s golf team concluded the league tournament in ninth place Sunday in Maple Plain, Minn.

The Buckeyes carded a final round of 15-over 299 in another day filled with gusty winds and finished with a three-day, 72-round total of 1,192 (+56) on the par 71, 7,152-yard course at Windsong Farm Golf Club.

Ohio State was just two strokes back from host Minnesota in eighth and three shots away from Michigan State in seventh.

The 2010 Big Ten Championship went to No. 9 Illinois, who fired a team score of 1,157 (+21) to take the title, holding off charging teams from Iowa, who was runner-up by three strokes, and Northwestern, just another three shots back in third.

David Lipsky of Northwestern took medalist honors after carding a final round of 71 for a sum of 3-under 281. Michigan’s Matt Thompson, who started the day tied for first with Lipsky, was the only other player to finish under par after placing second with a total of 283.

Hoag was the top finisher for Ohio State in a tie for seventh place after tallying his second-consecutive round of 76 after opening up the back-to-back 69’s for a total score of 6-over 290. The Honorable Mention All-American had six bogeys to one birdie in his final round.

Junior Brad Smith posted the best Buckeye round of the day, firing an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for 36th place with a total of 303. The Peru, Ind., native  came back after a tough third round to post three birdies in his first nine holes and help move seven spots up the leaderboard.

Playing in their first conference tournament, freshman Matt Turner finished in 31st place with a total of 301 after a final round of 77, while fellow rookie Zack Sobel tied for 44th at 308 after a round of 78.

On the other end, senior Brad Wright closed his final Big Ten championship by firing his best round of the tournament with a 75. His round featured three birdies to five bogeys and his only big hiccup came with a double-bogey on hole 1. The Cambridge, Ohio, native tied for 42nd with a total of 307.
