COLUMBUS, Ohio– Blaz Rola, a sophomore on the Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week Wednesday. It is the second consecutive week the Ptuj, Slovenia, native has been recognized by the conference office.
Rola, the two-time regional singles champion, posted a 6-0 record en route to the title. He also advanced to the doubles final with teammate Connor Smith, but dropped an 8-3 decision to fellow Buckeyes Chase Buchanan and Peter Kobelt.
Rola’s victory marked the fifth time in six seasons a Buckeye has captured the singles crown and the first time in program history an Ohio State player has claimed the title in back-to-back seasons.
With the victory, Rola, as well as Buchanan and Kobelt have qualified for the 2011 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, which will take place Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, N.Y. The tournament serves as the second of three premier national collegiate tennis events.
