BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning, capped by a three-run home run by Ben Greenspan, as the Hoosiers evened the series with a 5-3 victory Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Sembower Field.
Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton North) led of the top of the second with a home run to right field to give Ohio State an early 1-0 lead. The home run was his second of the season and the ninth of his career.
That lead was short-lived, however, as the Hoosiers scored five runs on seven hits, including an RBI double by Keith Haas, an RBI single by Jon Fixler and then a three-run home run by Ben Greenspan to give Indiana a 5-1 lead.
Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth to make it a three-run game, 5-2. The home run was Zoeller’s third of the season and the ninth of his career. Bourquin drove in Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) for the third run of the game in the sixth to pull within two runs.
OSU starter Cory Luebke (So., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) kept the Buckeyes close, allowing only one hit in the last four innings, a single by Haas to lead off the sixth.
The Buckeyes had seven hits, led by Bourquin who had two hits, including the solo home run and the RBI single in the sixth. Haas led the Hoosiers with two of the team’s eight hits.
Luebke was tagged with the loss, allowing the five runs on eight hits. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Josh Lewis got the win to improve to 4-5. He allowed the three runs (two earned) on six hits in his six innings. He gave way to Joe Vicini, who was listed to start the series finale, after he walked the lead-off batter in the top of the seventh. Vicini picked up his fourth save of the year.
Ohio State and Indiana will conclude the doubleheader immediately following this game and will close out the series with a single game Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on AM 920 WMNI and at ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
