%^$IOWA CITY, Iowa – Rightfielder Doug Deeds (So., Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) had two home runs and starting pitcher Nate Smith (Jr., Bryan, Ohio/Bryan) struck out a career-high 13 batters to lead Ohio State to 11-1 win and 3-1 series victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes Sunday at Duane Banks Field.%^$

%^$Deeds gave the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead in the third inning with his fifth home run of the season. The shot high over the fence in right field also scored Brett Garrard (So., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg), who doubled to left-centerfield over the outstretched arm of Jansen.%^$

%^$Another three runs in the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run home run by Lance Rolston (Jr., Athens, Ohio/Alexander), put the Buckeyes up 6-0. Nick Swisher (Jr., Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg) tripled to start the inning and later scored when Wilkins reached on an error by short stop Jeff Gremley. After Anderson lined out to right, Rolston hit his third home run of the year bringing in Wilkins and give the Buckeyes in command 6-0.%^$

%^$Deeds sent his second home run of the game just to the left of where he hit his two-run shot to right field in the third inning. The solo blast was the sixth home run of the season for Deeds, who took sole ownership of the team home run race.%^$

%^$After a walk, a base hit and a hit batsman the bases were load for pinch hitter Andy Cox, who drew a walk from Smith to break up the shutout bid. Paul Farinacci (Fr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) hit a pinch hit home run in the top of the eighth inning to extend the Buckeye lead to 8-1. It was his first home run as a Buckeye.%^$

%^$Ohio State added three runs in the top of the ninth, the highlight a solo home run, the third of the year, by Doug Dendinger (Sr., Greenwich, Ohio/Greenwich). Wilkins and Anderson also scored in the inning.%^$

%^$Smith pitched another Sunday gem for the Buckeye, sitting down batters in order in the second, fourth and fifth inning, including nine batters in a row at one point. Smith finished the game with a career-best 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work. He improved to 4-0 on the year with the victory allowing just one run on three hits. Chris Hanners (Fr., Groveport, Ohio/Desales) replaced Smith to start the eighth.%^$

%^$Ohio State got on the scoreboard in the second inning after Dendinger doubled off the wall in right field. He moved to third on a fly to center by Joe Wilkins (Sr., Grove City, Ohio/Dublin Scioto). Drew Anderson (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind./Brownsburg) flew out in foul territory outside of the left field line, but leftfielder Andy Jansen was not in a position to make a throw to the plate and Dendinger scored to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.%^$

%^$Ohio State improved to 21-8-1 overall and 9-3 in Big Ten play, while Iowa slipped to 12-17 and 3-9.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes step out of Big Ten play on Wednesday when they play host to the Dayton Flyers at 6:35 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. Ohio State will travel to Indiana next weekend.%^$
