Despite hitting four home runs, Ohio State fell 8-6 in theopening round of the Big Ten Tournament to Michigan. The Buckeyesfell behind early 7-1, but clawed back to within two in the ninthinning. All four of OSUs homers were of the solo variety.%^$ %^$After one day of the Big Ten Tournament, Ohio States Jason Trottleads the tournament field with four hits and two home runs. Threeof Trotts six home runs this year have come against the Wolverines.Last weekend, Trott became the first player in Big Ten history towin three consecutive Big Ten batting titles.%^$ %^$ Nate Smithmade the longest relief appearance of his career last night, going5.2 innings and allowing only one run while striking out two. Smiththrew 75 pitches – 50 strikes and 25 balls.%^$ %^$ Ohio Statecontinued its parade of home runs yesterday, going deep four times.Ohio State has now hit 31 home runs in the last 14 games.%^$ %^$Counting last night, Ohio State has dropped its opening round gameseven times in 13 Big Ten Tournament appearances (1999, 98, 95, 92,90, 89, 88). In the six prior tournaments where OSU dropped gameone, it rebounded for a win in the second game three times (95, 90,89). In 1995, Ohio State dropped its opening game in the tournamentto Purdue, but rebounded for four consecutive wins and captured thetournament title.%^$ %^$ Tom Durant extended his career longhitting streak to 13 games last night with a home run in the ninthinning. Durant, a first-team all-Big Ten selection in 1999, ishitting .311 (14-45) during the streak. Chad Ehrnsberger, anotherfirst-team all-Big Ten pick, extended his hitting streak to sevengames last night. He is hitting .435 (10-23) during the stretch.%^$%^$ Matt Middleton now has five home runs in his last 11 games (.46homer per game).%^$ %^$ Ohio State has now dropped back-to-backgames for the first time in 68 days. Prior to this current two-gamelosing stretch, OSU had not lost two-in-a-row since March 13-14.Ohio State has won 39 of its last 44 games.%^$ Mike Lockwood scoredtwo runs last night, bringing his season total to 69.
