Athlete of the Week

Senior Mari Hole guided the Buckeyes to their first tournament titleof the season, winning the Maryland Invitational, Aug. 31-Sept. 1.Hole finished the weekend with 51 total kills over 11 sets played,averaging 4.64 kills per set and 5.14 points per set. In the team’s3-0 win over Binghamton to start the tournament, Hole notched 13kills and a .365 attack percentage. She also added two service acesand six digs. Hole had a season-high 25 kills in the three-setsweep of Seton Hall Saturday morning. That mark was a kill awayfrom tying her career-high. In the final match of the tournament,Hole was a key player in Ohio State’s come-from-behind victory overhost Maryland. She recorded her first double-double of the seasonwith 13 kills and 13 digs in the five set victory. For her efforts,Hole was named to the All-Tournament team.

Men’s Cross Country
Head coach: Brice Allen

The Buckeyes began the 2012 campaign with a win at the Flyer 5KChallenge on Sept. 1 at Indian Rifle Park in Kettering, Ohio. OhioState finished the meet with a score of 36, edging Miami (Ohio) bya total of three points. The meet was the first under new associatehead coach Brice Allen.

Women’s Cross Country
Head coach: Khadevis Robinson

Ohio State cruised to a victory in its first meet of the 2012season on Sept. 1. The Buckeyes finished the Flyer 5K Challenge atIndian Rifle Park in Kettering, Ohio with 19 points; 19 pointsbetter than second place finisher Miami (Ohio) who had 38. The topthree individual finishers, and five of the top seven, were allBuckeyes. Junior Meredith Wagner (18.12.0), sophomore Michelle Thomas (18:21.0) and freshman Alexandra Aughenbaugh (18:23.0) were the top three finishers.

Field Hockey (2-3)
Head coach: Anne Wilkinson

Ohio State opened the season on Aug. 25 against UMass inDurham, N.H. The Buckeyes dropped a 2-1 decision to the Minutewomenin overtime. Ohio State returned to action the following day,defeating No. 18 New Hampshire on Aug. 26 by a score of 1-0 to givehead coach Anne Wilkinson her 200th career win. The Buckeyes earned theirsecond win of the season on Aug. 31, topping American inWashington, D.C. by a score of 2-0 before falling to No. 1Maryland, 2-0, on Sept. 2 at the Field Hockey & LacrosseComplex in College Park, Md.

Football (1-0)
Head coach: Urban Meyer

Ohio State opened the 2012 season with a 56-10 win over Miami(Ohio). Sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller rushed for 161 yards (a record for an Ohio Statequarterback) and threw two touchdown passes in the win. Head coachUrban Meyer is now 11-0 in season openers.

Men’s Soccer (1-2-1)
Head coach: John Bluem

Ohio State opened the regular season at Dayton on Aug. 24,dropping a 3-2 decision to the Flyers. Ohio State returned to thepitch two days later, falling 2-0 to the University ofIllinois-Chicago on Aug. 26. The Buckeyes played to a 1-1 drawagainst No. 16 Coastal Carolina in their opening round game of theWolstein Classic on Aug. 31, and battled back to a 3-2 overtime winover Davidson after falling behind 2-0 in the 61st minute.

Women’s Soccer (3-2-0)

Ohio State opened its regular season at Hofstra on Aug. 17,falling to the Pride by a score of 2-0. Ohio State then traveled toRutgers on Aug. 19, where they dropped a 1-0 decision to theScarlet Knights in double overtime. The Buckeyes earned their firstwin of the season, a 3-0 win over Northeastern at Jesse OwensMemorial Stadium on Aug. 24. Ohio State played to a 1-0 victoryover No. 17 Maryland at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Aug. 26.The Buckeyes defeated Syracuse, 2-0, at Jesse Owens MemorialStadium on Sept. 2.

Women’s Volleyball (5-1)
Head coach: Geoff Carlston

Ohio State opened the 2012 season as host of the Sports ImportsDC Koehl Classic. The Buckeyes went 2-1 at that tournament, earningwins over Houston (3-0) and Toledo (3-0) before falling to No. 20Oregon (3-2). The Buckeyes swept all three of their opponents atthe Maryland Invitational, defeating Binghamton (3-0) in theopening round on Aug. 31, followed by wins over Seton Hall (3-0)and Maryland (3-2). Seniors Emily Danks and Mari Hole and junior Davionna DiSalvatore were named to the All-Tournament team,while Danks earned the tournament’s Most Valuable Player honor.
