Swimmer Marty Tomes was a double-event winner at last Tuesday’s victory over Cleveland State, placing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.84 and in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 49.59. He currently holds four individual and one relay season best time and looks to lead the squad in the butterfly and freestyle events this weekend when the Buckeyes compete in the Auburn Invitational.
Stacey Gordon was named the Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week for the fourth time this season and the 11th time of her career. Gordon had 30 kills, hitting .456 and added 13 digs in a 3-0 win at Iowa. She had 21 kills and 19 digs in the 0-3 loss at No. 19 Minnesota. Gordon’s 30 kills against Iowa was her ninth match this season with 30 or more kills. With her 21 kills against Minnesota, she now has recorded double-figure kills in her last 76 matches. Gordon was also named to the All-Big Ten squad for the third time.
Against IUPUI Dec. 1, junior shooting guard Caity Matter (Bluffton, Ohio/Bluffton) led all scorers with 26 points and drained eight (of 12) 3-pointers to break Ohio State’s single-game record, which was set by former two-time All-American Katie Smith vs. Northwestern Jan. 15, 1995 and then tied by Matter Jan. 16, 2003 at Wisconsin. Matter, who is pacing the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes (4-0; 0-0 Big Ten) with 21.0 points per game and a 50 percent stroke from the 3-point arc, tallied three rebounds, three assists and one steal vs. the Jaguars. Matter also led all scorers in the previous game (Nov. 25) vs. UNC Wilmington with 20 points and a 5-of-9 night from downtown.
